Training your puppy to use the bathroom in a certain place unfortunately means you have to continuously watch him during this process. Catching puppy in the act is the most important part of this experience. If you are lazy about training and only catch him here and there, your efforts will not be as successful. So be prepared to stay home for several days or more in a row and put your best friend through “potty training boot camp.”

As soon as your dog poops on the floor or any place other than the designated area, tell him in a firm voice, “No, don’t go there.” Then physically take him to the newspaper, mat or wherever you want him to relieve himself. Stay calm but let him know you mean business. Much like a child, your puppy will become frightened if you shout and get angry at him. This will only cause him to hide and go where you can’t see him, and then you’ll have worse messes to clean up in those hard to reach areas.

If your puppy hasn’t finished by the time you reach him, praise him when he finishes in the designated spot, even if you may have a little mess on your floor. Let him get used to the idea of going to that particular area every time so he doesn’t get intimidated by it. Be sure to praise him every time he does the right thing.

Once your puppy gets into the habit of not pooping all over your carpet, don’t let up on the praise and treats. Even dogs need constant attention and positive words. Eventually, he will come and get you to take him outside. At this point, you have reached your goal. Your puppy is trained and your floors will stay clean and smelling fresh.
